Chuck Joy

Dr. Joy was born in Cleveland, OH, and was brought to Erie, PA, early in life. He graduated from Cathedral Preparatory School in 1969. He won Gold Key in English. He attended Fordham University and graduated in 1973 with Honors. He attended the University of Pittsburg School of Medicine (’78).


He started to write poetry in 1980. Early publications included Bogg and Medicinal Purposes Literary Review. He read poetry around Erie and the region.


He completed a psychiatry internship at Warren State Hospital and completed child psychiatry training at West Virginia University Hospital in Morgantown, WV. Dr. Joy returned to Erie in 1987 and has since practiced as a community child psychiatrist.


He has authored several collections of poetry. He served as the Poet Laureate of Erie County, PA from 2018-2021. In 2011 Dr. Joy taught an undergraduate course in Poetry Therapy at Mercyhurst University where John Fox presented as a guest.


He joined the Board of IPM in 2020.
