Completing the course meant that I now have the increased confidence and belief that I have what it takes to guide others to use poetic medicine as a way of looking after their own mental health as well as making time to nourish their own creative spirit. I also appreciate the ongoing, online support from John Fox, the IPM and peer facilitators. I am ever so thankful for this sense of belonging and connectedness that I have experienced with this community.

We finished our first Poetry as a Tool for Wellness group and produced a chapbook! We were from around all states of Australia (via Zoom) and turned out to all be people with a lived experience of mental health challenges…
I very much need to run this wonderful course again! So, thank you, thank you, thank you! Keep up your great work and may you continue to inspire us to reach out further.

By presenting Poetry as a Tool for Wellness, I am eliminating the stigma about mental illness I’ve carried within myself. I am seeing how I can help myself and help others with mental illness, to use poetry to problem solve and deepen self-respect, self-understanding and compassion.

Learn more about the facilitator's manual and training program in this intro webinar with Cathey Capers, one of the creators. Cathey is a certified Poetic Medicine Practitioner, and Poetry Partner, and former board member of the Institute for Poetic Medicine.
As a third-year student of The Institute for Poetic Medicine’s Poetic Medicine Practitioner Certificate Training Program, Cathey began offering Poetry as a Tool for Recovery (PATFR) at the Austin Clubhouse. PATFR was developed by early IPM Poetry Partner Lisa DeVuono and had been recently printed as a guide for others to implement. Clubhouse is an international network of accredited centers offering adults with a mental health diagnosis, opportunities for personal development and assistance with goals such as housing, employment and education.
Cathey began in 2015 offering the 8-week series of strength- and skills-based sessions that utilize poetry to enhance skills and strategies essential for wellbeing. The following year she began training participants as Peer Facilitators. To date there are four active Peer Facilitators in Austin offering this curriculum to Austin Clubhouse and to participants in IPM's 4-week series of Live Trainings for Experiential Learners.
In 2019 IPM published Poetry as a Tool for Wellness:
A Peer Facilitator’s Manual, an expanded and revised version of the original Guide edited by Cathey and influenced by the work of Cindy Washabaugh at
Magnolia Clubhouse in Ohio.
In 2020 Cathey developed a series of online training programs for a worldwide audience interested in implementing PATFW. IPM funded and supported the development of these trainings for peer-facilitators and healthcare professionals eager to add poetic medicine to their healing skills and offer poetry circles to their communities.
